New Yarn!

So, I found this great cowl and mitten set in the new issue of KnitScene and I'm going to make them. I ordered my yarn from The Yarn Exchange and they shipped my order immediately. I placed my order the morning of Aug. 5th and got my order this morning! Excellent, I will definitely shop there again!

They also sent me a little silly and unexpected gift with my order. I'm now an owner of a Need Yarn emergency beacon (there a mirror on the back). Haha, sweet!

Postcrossing!

I've recently signed up for an account with Postcrossing. My friend Whitney at WRKDesigns turned me on to this site. Postcrossing is an online postcard exchange program that connects you with random postcard senders from around the world. Depending upon how active you are and how many postcards you send, you'll start receiving postcards from all over the world. So far I've sent 9 postcards and just got my first postcard from Taiwan the other day! Now I want more!

These are postcards that I've made for my random assigned recipients. I like to make special cards that match my recipients' interests. It's fun!

So far, I've sent postcards to Germany, France, Taiwan, the Netherlands, and Slovania to name a few. It's totally free, except the postage of course and when the random postcards start coming in, it makes it all worth it!

We caved! Meet Our New Pup Mesa!

We added a puppy to our family a couple days ago. Darin fell in love with a Pomeranian at the pet store a while back and over time started convincing himself and me that we wanted a pom pup or a pom mix as a playmate for our awesome dog, Rex. We found a litter and got our little Mesa. She's a little young, 5 weeks currently. Her mother stopped wanting feeding them, but luckily she's eating puppy food. I give her a nice yummy mix of soaked puppy chow, pup formula, a little cesar puppy food, and vitamin gel. I wanted to make sure she was getting a good amount of nutrients. She's getting a puppy belly already, lol.

Anyway, she's a Poodle/Pomeranian mix. Her daddy's a pom & her mom a poodle. The parents are dear little things. So sweet and friendly! I'm hoping she inherits some of their good dogginess. We realize that pups away from their litters early have a disadvantage when it comes to learning to be dog and play. We've been doing our best to yelp and let her know when play is too rough.. also that biting people isn't appropriate.

Rex, our older dog, is really turning out to be an excellent role model. She's really became quite fond of him and he's so gentle with her! Rex is a 110lb st. bernard/rotty mix. He's massive compared to her. But he's a big, red teddy bear with her. Anytime she cries or barks, he checks on her. When he comes in from his walk or doing his business, her crate is the first thing he goes to when he enters the house. She tries to follow him around the house and lay with him. It's really cute.

She gets a little spunky every now and then. Her tail stands up and curls over, then she has to practice her barking and growling. Then 2 minutes later, dog is down. Crashed on the floor. Too funny.

We're really happy with our little family. Here's a little treat. She's taking down my camera to lick the crap out of it, haha. :)

I work for a nonprofit, public access photography & imaging facility called Community Darkrooms here at Syracuse University. Community Darkrooms is a facility run by the Light Work gallery. My job here is pretty much as an assistant manager to the digital area. I help maintain our computer lab and answer any technical questions, but mainly I print big, big fine art prints. I run 3 Epson large format printers and have a steady stream of work to keep me busy. I also teach photoshop on the side.

So, anyway, we recently made some changes and sadly had to let our color processor and darkrooms go in order to accommodate our expanding digital lab. No more c-prints. :( But, we've left our b&w wet lab in place, but our color has moved digital. I'm pretty excited about the change.
Our print lab will be in a much more spacious, modern area. We're upgrading our printers, yay! We'll be state-of-the-art really soon, within the next week or two! Yesterday we had workers installing a brand-new hardwood maple flooring.. so we're almost there! I'll post more as renovation and moving in progresses!

It's been a long, long time! I've been so bad at updating my blog! Let's see, let's see... what's been up with me?

Gallerie SUZE posted a kickin post about my pouches in her blog back in February! She also showcased works by rennes-le-château and Ruth's Crafts. Thanks Suze (sorry I'm a little late!) and nice work fellow Etsians!

Over the past couple years, I've had the pleasure of meeting and working with my friend, Whitney. You can view her etsy shop here! Whitney is recently graduated from Syracuse University and is one of the most creative people I know. Whitney's bio states:

"I am a surface pattern and graphic designer. My surface patterns have sold to companies such as: Kimberly Clark, Lane Bryant, Crabtree and Evelyn, Glen Raven, Mudlark, Sunbury, and Staples...".
Right now, her shop currently offers custom design work, custom iron-on decals and original art prints, but I'm fairly certain you will find more for she's always experimenting and reinventing! This shop is definitely work keeping an eye on! And, maybe a future CarrieDee & DesignsByWhitney endeavour in the future??! Wouldn't that be awesome!

On the homefront, I've been revamping my space. I'm trying to organize and develop new idea and such. I recently installed some shelving.. I'm so excited about the space they freed up! Like a chain-reaction, that got me thinking I needed some nice boxes to organize everything on the new shelves. So,I spent an afternoon covering shoe boxes with fabric! I think I'm addicted to covering boxes now, lol! Since then I've been looking around to see what I can cover next! (btw, I do still have these prints in stock!)

Lots and lots of changes since the last time I blogged! I'll give a synopsis!

Due to complications with life, I moved back home with the parents a couple months ago. My sewing and crafting got completely disheveled! I only just recently put my sewing and crafting space together! Yay, I'm back! I have tons of new ideas and I've been developing patterns for a variety of different accessories and other little things (details soon to come!). I can't wait to get into designing clothing!

On a personal project level.. I got this awesome knitting book! I found it used on amazon for $11. That's a steal, it's a $30 book. And I'm making this trumpet skirt from it for myself in a wine red color. I can't wait until it's finished!

Today we had a party for the graduating SU seniors who worked for us. It's not going to be the same at work. :( I'm going to miss you guys! Good luck to all of you! And Salsarita's is some good eatin'!

For those of you that don't know me, I work for Light Work & Community Darkrooms. I work on the Community Darkrooms side in the digital lab. I print on big printers, help maintain the digital lab, mentor, and assist members and visiting artists with their techniques, art, and skills. I also teach a one day class once a semester on everything inbetween the input and output process. It's fun. I love my job.

So, anyway, I already posted this in my Myspace blog, but I also can't forget this one.

Working at Light Work allows me to meet all kind of interesting artists. Throughout the year, Light Work invites about 15 artists to come take advantage of our facilities for a month. I had the privilage to work with and print for 2 photographers this month, Cristina Fraire & John Clark Mayden.

Cristina Fraire

Argentinean photographer Cristina Fraire will be using her time at Light Work to work with images from her The Austere Life, Shepherds at the End of the Millennium photographic essay. Fraire's images capture mountain shepherd communities that are isolated high in the Cordoba province—communities that do not use electricity or telephones, don't have roads, and depend on sheep as their single economic resource. According to the International Center for Photography, "In the barren and rocky terrain, the ancient connections between generations remained unchanged until urban ways were introduced by tourists and solar-powered televisions. Fraire's pictures reflect this blending of the ancient and new, but also assert the distinctive features of the shepherds' natural landscape." She will use her residency to evaluate the photographs, oral testimonies, and texts for printing and the potential creation of a book dummy.

Fraire's work has been featured in both solo and group exhibitions internationally. She studied psychology at Universidad de Buenos Aires and fine arts at the Argentine Society for Fine Arts Artists, then went on to teach fine arts to children. When she discovered photography, she decided to quit teaching to dedicate her life to photography full-time.

John Clark Mayden

John Clark Mayden is dedicating his time at Light Work to printing his black-and-white images of city life in Baltimore, MD. Mayden's images capture, in his words, "the realities of black people living in low income cities." His work depicts the wide range of experiences found in inner city life, from good times and joy to drugs, misery, social injustice, and crime. Mayden feels that photographers are put in the unique position to record life as they see it, and that they should maintain the skills of documentation, composition, and printing so that future generations can see accurate pictures of life during a certain time, in a certain place. He has used photography his whole life to address social injustices, and has worked frequently with organizations whose mission is to serve low income communities, families, and children.

Mayden has worked in Baltimore's Law Department for twenty-six years. He obtained his BA from Ohio Wesleyan University and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Baltimore School of Law. His photographs have been exhibited nationwide, and are featured in permanent collections at Baltimore Museum of Art and Ohio Wesleyan University, among others.

So, You've probably seen the poll on the side of the web page and blog. I want to know how people are finding my site. Please tell me how you got here!

I listed two new glasses sleeves on Etsy tonight. On one I embroidered a dragonfly to replace the one I sold and the other, a couple little birds, a birdhouse, and a couple tulips! Cute! I'm happy with how they turned out.

And, lastly, here's the tampon pouch donation I put together for Equal Access! It's on it's way tomorrow morning. Off to bed. The grind starts tomorrow!

I finally listed the upcycled terry cloth tote bag. It turned out pretty cute! I like it, and hopefully somebody else does too.

I went through a bunch of beads and listed them as supplies too. I need to get rid of more supplies. I have too many things!

I got the tampon pouches all ready to go for the auction! Exciting. I'll be shipping them off on Monday.

And, I cleaned up my sewing corner in the attic today. It's a rather nice little corner now. I put up curtains and pictures :) I like it.

That's about it. I've got some embroidery work to do before bed.

Yes, it's 2am and No... I never stop.

A Wonderful Shop

I recently ran into a shop owner on Etsy in the chat rooms area. I was touched by this family's motivation to raise donations for a cause. Aunt Mary's Legacy are the surviving family members of Aunt Mary. 100% of all procedes are donated to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. I haven't made jewerly in a while, so I decided to donate a bunch of my bead stock to this family to help them with their cause.

The first official post on the first official CarrieDee Handcrafted blog! Woo hoo! Aren't we all just so excited!

Kidding, kidding..

Anyway,
I've been doing lots and lots and tons and tons of revamping to the store, the merch, the website, and the blog. After a brand spakin new blog and tearing my hair out to figure out how to get the darned thing on my webpage, I've finally gotten the blog almost where I want it. Whew!
And now that I'm done, I'm starved and need to go get myself some dinner! So I'll leave you with....
